The development of the orchard began in 2000 using organic principals
and, in June 2006 it reached full organic status. BioGro is New Zealand’s
leading organic certification agency and one of just 30 international
organic certification agencies accredited by the International Federation
of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). IFOAM represents the best
in international organic standards. The orchard is reviewed and audited
by BioGro each year, at which time we must prove that any inputs applied,
such as fertilisers or composts and pest or weed treatments, comply
with the BioGro Standards and are beneficial to the organic structure
of the soil.
Currently Pinewater has 1200 feijoa trees and 100 lime trees. We specialise
in organic feijoas, with three different varieties: Unique, Apollo and
Den’s Choice. Each of these cultivars have their own characteristics.
Unique fruit are small to medium in size with rough, green to light-green
skin. Their shape is very even and oval but more rounded than other
varieties. The flesh is relatively smooth in texture, soft and juicy.
Pulp content is low to medium and usually arranged in four even locules.
Flavour is mildly aromatic, sub-acid and of excellent eating quality.
The flowers are self-fertile so that cross pollination is not essential.
Fruit is harvested very early in the season.
Apollo fruit are very large with moderately rough, green to light-green
skin. Their shape is sometimes uneven, oval and quite elongated. The
flesh is relatively smooth in texture, soft and very juicy. Pulp content
is medium to high. Flavour is mildly aromatic, sweet and of excellent
eating quality. The flowers are partially self fertile but cross pollination
is essential to obtain large fruit with even pulp development. Fruit
is harvested mid-season.
Den's Choice is a new variety of feijoa with large, very sweet fruit.
The flowers are self fertile so that cross pollination is not essential.
Fruit is harvested early to mid

season. The point of difference with Den's Choice fruit is that, unlike
all other varieties, the feijoas can be eaten immediately after picking.
During the harvest season the feijoas are hand picked each day, polished,
graded and sent off to the domestic and processing markets or sold at
the local Farmers Country Market. Anyone requiring feijoas can contact
us using the details on the Contact Us page.
We have planted
100 Bearss lime trees, but these will not be producing commercial quantities
until 2008. The Bearss is a Tahitian lime that is slightly smaller but
very similar to the Tahitian Persian lime. It is greenish yellow when
ripe but is harvested to be sold when it is still green because the acidity
level is higher, which provides a better flavour. It is oval in shape
and seedless.
